“I’d never seen my dad cry before today!” Jordyn giggled, delighted, as she walked. She was tucked under her new husband’s arm. They huddled together under a single umbrella on the way to take husband and wife portraits on their wedding day. Their joy was palpable.

Moments before, their emotional ceremony ensured there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd. In hindsight, I can tell you that if a guest managed to keep their cool during the ceremony, they were sure to overflow during the best man’s speech later that evening. I even lost it behind my camera in that moment.

It was an exquisitely emotional day for so many in attendance.

The one moment no one else got to see earlier in the day, the one that Jordyn was referencing on our way to photos, was her first look with her dad…

I had only met Bernie in passing earlier in the day. He had been in search of his wife, laughing through his apprehension about going upstairs where all those “girl things” were happening. Now, I was staring into the face of a man uncertain what combination of emotion lay behind the door I was pointing to.

He looked excited and apprehensive at the same time, ready to climb the last three steps to the top floor room where his daughter was waiting for him.

I looked him in the eye and said: “This is your moment. Take as long as you need and enjoy every moment. Your little girl needs you right now.…
